The Carp and the Dragon Gate
The Carp and the Dragon Gate - I walk through an ornate doorway in Hanoi's French Quarter. As I stepped through into a temple courtyard, there on the wall was this striking mural: a carp at the bottom that transformed into a dragon as your eyes traveled upward.
This was right around the time I'd launched my strategic gift consulting business, so maybe I was primed to see meaning everywhere. But something about that image stuck with me.
I looked up the story later. It's a Vietnamese legend about a carp that swims against strong currents and leaps over the Dragon Gate waterfall—and in that moment of perseverance, transforms into a dragon. For centuries, it's symbolized the journey from ordinary to extraordinary. Resilience. The hard-won transformation that comes from refusing to give up.
The parallel was immediate. Starting a business means swimming upstream, jumping at obstacles that feel impossibly high, trusting that the effort compounds into something remarkable.
When I got home, I had the story carved into my desk.
Now I build my business on a surface that carries that myth—a powerful daily reminder that I'm here to create the extraordinary, not what's comfortable or conventional. Every client meeting, every strategy session happens there.
And here's what makes it more than just a metaphor: my actual work mirrors this transformation. I help companies take the ordinary act of corporate gifting and turn it into something strategic, meaningful, something that actually strengthens relationships and communicates values.
Generic gift basket → thoughtful, strategic experience that drives real business outcomes. Carp → Dragon.
The legend resonates because it's about the willingness to keep swimming against the current, to keep jumping, to believe that the ordinary—whether it's a fish or a business or a corporate gift—holds the potential to become something much more.
So that's what I'm doing. Building on a desk carved with an ancient story, working with clients who want to transform how they connect with people, move their business forward, pursuing the extraordinary one client and project at a time.
